Coconut trees are just one of the valuable commodities commonly found in Pariaman. Locally they are known as the 'Tree of Life' because of all the products they offer to the Pariamanese. However, often only one minor part is exploited, the kernel, which is processed to produce coconut oil. A unique attraction for visitors is the partnership between monkey and man! Monkeys are trained to climb the trees and knock the coconuts to the ground so they can be collected and sold by their owners.
