The Minangkabau people are famous for their culinary skills and with good reason. Some of the most tasty dishes include Ketupak Gulai Paku (a steamed rice and vegetable dish), Sala Bulek (a special snack made with rice powder and fish), Bubur Kampiun (made from the pulp of rice powder), Padang Sate (Satay) , Goreng Pisang jo Katan (fried banana with jasmine rice), Gado-gado (Indonesian salad), Serabi (a cake made from rice powder), Bubur Putih Bagulo saka (made from the pulp of rice powder with brown sugar), Bubur Kacang Padi (steamed green beans cooked with coconut milk) and Pariaman's special drink, sugared tea mixed with raw eggs.
One of the most popular fods in Pariaman is satay and it is available almost everywhere! It is particularly popular in Pasar Pariaman, Kurataji, Simp. Kp. Cino, Batang Kabuang and Simp. Lapai Various kinds of satay are available such as beef, buffalo, chicken, goat and bean. It is made from many different parts of the animal including the skin, tongue and liver and is usually eaten with a glass of cendol (a kind of soft drink in Indonesia).
